Homework

Is it an effective learning tool or does it create animosity between home and school? As I am not a homeroom teacher, I don't have a good sense as to what it does for kids. Is there anyone out there with homework opinions?

Oh, I have homework opinions! In fact, I have an entire site of homework opinions. Most homework is a total waste of time- especially for young students. It is not until middle school that homework provides any real benefit. The best homework? Reading! Check out the Homework Manifesto at www.family-homework-answers.com/homework-manifesto.html

After thinking about this for a couple of days, my answer is that homework is useful, in moderation, if a parent is engaged. Helping my first grade son with homework keeps me aware of what he is studying, and gives me an opportunity to discuss his school day/life. I also think that it reinforces some skills -- writing and reading in particular -- as long as it isn't too onerous. We get a packet at the beginning of the week and can do as much (or as little) as fits into our day each day. Usually we parcel it out to about 15 minutes a day (preceded by an hour of whining about it, of course!)
